Project 257 Accelerating Women's Financial Equality

Should it really take another 257 years[1] to close the economic gender gap?

Not if PNC can help it.

We're Not Waiting for Change. We're Working for It.

Project 257®: Accelerating Women’s Financial Equality is a PNC initiative to bring visibility to efforts that can help close the economic gender gap. Project 257 was inspired by the World Economic Forum’s 2020 Global Gender Gap Report, which found that at the current pace of progress, it would take another 257 years for women to catch up to men economically.

In the 2023 Report, the gap narrowed to 169 years. It’s still too long to wait.

Why There’s an Economic Gender Gap

Under-representation in the workforce

Only 58%* of women eligible to work are in the labor market, versus 70% of men, and women are significantly under-represented in high-growth industries and jobs.

Income inequity

Women are less likely than men to earn income from investments and other activities outside of their job, and even in the 21st century, some women in similar positions as men are still paid less.

Unequal access to credit

Studies consistently show disparities between men and women when it comes to securing business loans and consumer financing.

Unpaid work

Even in the United States, women spend almost twice as much time as men on unpaid work such as childcare and elder care, which can hold them back from career opportunities or employment at all.
