Tamara Winfrey-Harris, PRESIDENT, Women’s Fund of Central Indiana

Tamara Winfrey-Harris, a blue and brown book case is in the background. To make Central Indiana a community where everyone who identifies as a woman or girl can thrive, we must name the problems and the possibilities.

In November, Women’s Fund of Central Indiana will release its State of Women in Central Indiana Report, developed in partnership with Polis Center at Indiana University Indianapolis. It is one of the most important things we will do this year. The report will provide stakeholders with up-to-date and actionable community intelligence to inform decision-making about programs, funding, and policy intended to help ensure that every woman and girl in Central Indiana has an equitable opportunity to reach her full potential—no matter their place, race or identity. (Sign up to get the report.)

We are honored to stand alongside Girl Coalition and its invaluable Indiana Girl Report and happy to preview some key findings from both reports here. By the end of this year, stakeholders will have an unprecedented understanding of what it means to be a woman or girl in our community. Explore this information. Share it. This is how we ensure the health of our community and our families. This is how we begin to do right by women and girls.

How are girls really faring in Indiana? This question led to the launch of the Indiana Girl Report. The answer: It is quite complicated. We disaggregated data of all Indiana youth to reveal a mix of truths linked explicitly to girls. This year, we dug deeper and had more conversations with girls, caregivers, and those who care about girls across the state. We are proud to release the 2024 Indiana Girl Report, which includes definitive calls to action.

It is an honor to stand with the Women’s Fund of Central Indiana to share a comprehensive picture of girls and women today. Change starts with awareness. I am excited to guest edit the newsletter this month to showcase the state of women and girls. This conversation starts here, but we encourage you to continue the dialogue in your own networks.

At the end of the day, we are working to ensure all Indiana girls can live their best lives physically, academically, emotionally, and socially. To truly make that a reality for girls today – it takes collective action. Read the reports. Start the conversation. Take action today.
