Actually it’s not totally soul-stirring. But it is eye-opening. And by the end you may be able to identify some key ways you could tighten up your style and create much more of the look and feel you love at home.
Count the Yeses as you go along….
Do You Have a Home Style?
Can you meaningfully describe it in 3 words that someone else would understand?- Are there key threads of one consistent style throughout all the spaces in your home? Even if you make unique statements here and there?
- Overall, does your home have a color scheme?
From one room to the next are the major colors used complementary and/or cohesive? - Do you stick to one shade of white — or complimentary shades — throughout the home?
- For any given room, are there no more than 3 colors used in a significant way?
- Is there a continuous general style in floor covering and window treatment that helps maintain an overall look and feel?
- When it comes to wood used in flooring, cabinetry, trim, doors, furnishings, etc., are there no more than two or three different finishes in the home?
- For fixture and hardware finishes — chrome, brass, nickel, wrought iron — are there no more than two or three different finishes in the home?
- Is there no more than one room that is not at all designed or decorated?
- Does the style, color scheme, and use of materials in your home fit the look and feel you prefer?
If you answered yes to 7 or more, then you’re well on your way to a unified look and feel at home, which invites a sense of calm and harmony at home.
If you’re at 6 or less, consider how to edit your space to achieve a more consistent and personal approach to each space.
