Who doesn’t like story time? Especially with grown-up tales and drinks. The storytelling scene is growing in Indianapolis, and there are some great events featuring local women to check out in February and March.

First up: Four women will make statements—literally and figuratively—as part of the Style and Fashion edition of IndyStar Storytellers Feb. 5 at the Indianapolis Art Center. They include Polina Osherov, executive director of Pattern magazine and the creative director of Indy Maven; costume designer Jess West (featured in one of Indy Maven‘s very first newsletters); Bethany Daugherty, owner of ReCraft in Fountain Square; and Sierra Holmes, a fashion blogger who manages

If dive bars and music are more your thing, check out Voice Box Indy, a new storytelling series brought to Indianapolis by Haley Lawrence, a local empowerment coach. The series, which originated in Chicago, is described as part poetry slam, part concert, and part live performance. Musical guest Melissa Sandullo will open the Feb. 18 event at the Dugout Bar in Fletcher Place, and the five storytellers will “loosely” base their stories on the song “Wasteland, Baby” by Hozier. Feel a spontaneous need to bare your soul? There’s an open mic at the end.

If you can’t wait to see the new Netflix series, Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker, which premieres March 20, then you won’t want to miss Deborah Asante’s performance of “Sarah The Dreambuilder: a Story Tracing the Rise of Madam C.J. Walker” March 8 at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center. Asante, a well-known actress, director, and storyteller, is the founder and artistic director of Asante Children’s Theatre. Storytelling Arts of Indiana will present the program in partnership with the Indiana Historical Society and the Madam Walker Legacy Center.
