Looking for that “main character energy” you find in all your favorite fall flicks and novels? From afternoons spent in independent bookstores to stirring up farmers’ market-inspired meals, here are nine ways to romanticize your life this fall in Indy.

Irvington Vinyl and Books

1. Browse a local bookstore.

Nothing says fall like books. Make a point to visit an independently-owned bookstore, à la “You’ve Got Mail.” Need a recommendation for where to go? No problem! Check out our list of Woman-Owned Bookstores. For extra autumn vibes, snag a classic like “Anne of Green Gables” or a Jane Austen novel.

2. Have an autumn picnic.

Picnics aren’t just for summer. Head to Goose the Market, gather some charcuterie essentials—like cured meats, cheese, and crackers—along with a simple grain salad and fresh bread, and head to one of Indy’s beautiful parks, such as Holliday Park or Garfield Park Conservatory.

3. Girl, put your records on.

While we love a fall Spotify playlist, there’s something special about hand-selecting new tunes at a local record shop like Luna Music or Indy CD & Vinyl. Jazz by classic artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, or Miles Davis give fall vibes, but don’t hesitate to ask the staff for recommendations—they love talking music. No record player? No problem, they sell those, too.

4. Schedule some coffee dates.

Connecting with a partner, a friend, or even yourself over a warm cup of coffee can be incredibly fulfilling. Explore the cozy coffee shops around Indianapolis that you’ve been curious about, like Blue Mind or Provider. Bring a book, a journal, or knitting—whatever pairs perfectly with a foamy latte.

Fall Walk - Solo

5. Now schedule solo time.

While it’s easy to get caught up in planning all the fun fall activities with friends and family, take this time to embrace your own company. Call it your villain era or main character energy—whatever works for you! Make space to get to know yourself a little better this season. Enjoy your own company, whether it’s a walk along the canal or a solo visit to Newfields.

6. Head to the farmer’s market.

Stock up on items so you can experiment with hearty fall dishes like butternut squash soup, roasted root vegetables, or a classic pot roast. Or, buy the delicious pre-made seasonal favorites like pumpkin bread, apple crisps, or cinnamon rolls from a vendor.

7. Create a custom fall-scented candle.

Head to one of Indy’s candle-making shops like Penn & Beech or Unplug Soy Candles and create your signature scented candle for fall.

8. Go wine tasting at a local winery.

Visit a nearby winery like Easley Winery (perhaps one of their seasonal sips), Daniel’s Vineyard, or even head south to Oliver Winery to enjoy a wine-tasting experience. Look for cozy indoor seating or scenic outdoor views where you can enjoy the crisp fall air, close your eyes, and you just might think you’re in upstate New York for a moment.

9. Have dinner at a cozy restaurant.

Make a reservation at one of Indianapolis’ cozy and intimate restaurants. Consider places like Bluebeard or The Loft at Traders Point Creamery, which offer seasonal menus and warm atmospheres perfect for a fall evening.
