Race Day Guide

Fun fact: The Indy 500 draws more than 300,000 people every year. But there is so much more going on all month long leading up to the race. From music to parades to marathons, Indiana pulls out all the (pit)stops:

Going to the race this year? Check out these tips to survive and thrive for a long (but fun!) day out by the track.

  1. Plan out your pickup and dropoff. The biggest pain point by far will be getting to and from the event. Schedule your uber driver in advance and anticipate that you’ll be walking a bit to avoid waiting in traffic. Most people get dropped off at the corner of 10th and Polco Streets. There’s also a race day shuttle service from downtown Indy.
  2. Indy 500 PagodaPack those snacks. And yes, you can bring your own food and drinks (including alcohol) into the IMS! Just no glass containers. Double check your cooler is no bigger than 18”x15”x15” and you’re good to go. Coordinate with your group and pick snacks that are easy finger foods. Our favorites? Lunchables (a classic), uncrustables, and meats and cheeses.
  3. Prepare for the elements. During last year’s crazy rainstorm, we lucked out by coming prepped with ponchos. Bring umbrellas (for the heat) and make the splurge to buy a seat cushion. Your body will thank you later.
  4. Explore around the IMS. Most people are arriving hours before the race begins, so you have plenty of time to explore all that the IMS has to offer. If you’re a concert fan, make sure to grab a ticket for the Snake Pit (which also includes general race admission). This party is always packed with big EDM names. If you prefer a more laid-back atmosphere, take a stroll around the track, check out vendors, and load up on 500 gear.

The SparkSpend The Day In Speedway

There’s more to Speedway than just fast Indy cars. Stroll down Main Street for local eats, craft brews, and a glimpse into the town’s deep motorsports roots.

Savor the Flavor

Make sure to caffeinate at The Spark, a local coffee shop that’s all about community. They’ve got all the coffee you could want and incredible breakfast sandwiches, so you’re definitely going to want to kick your day off here.

Then grab a bite at Dawson’s on Main. This is a well-known, family-owned spot known for its hearty Hoosier fare with Midwest favorites (like the tenderloin) and friendly service.

IMS MuseumGet Your Race Fix

The IMS museum is now reopen! This is a can’t-miss family attraction that celebrates the history of racing. You can also take a guided tour of the legendary track which includes the chance to “kiss the bricks.” Be sure to grab your museum tickets in advance if you want access to the track tour. It’s an unforgettable way to experience the heart and soul of this historic landmark up close.

Who says racing is only for the pros? Test your skills on the track at Speedway Indoor Karting (SIK), where drivers of all ages and skill levels can reach top speeds. It’s the perfect place for some friendly competition or a fun-filled family outing.

Finish the Day with a Drink

Big WoodsBig Woods is a well-known Indiana hotspot that’s added a Speedway location just down the street from the IMS. They’ve got good food, all the amazing brews from QuaffOn and cocktails from Hard Truth Distillery. The beer garden is the perfect spot to kick off patio season too. Check them out on Tuesdays for trivia.

Enjoy a local beer (try the Lift Off IPA!) while catching a game on TV at Daredevil Brewing. If sports aren’t your thing, stop by to enjoy one of the other many events they host. The Speedway Running Club meets outside every Wednesday at 6pm, and the brewery regularly hosts Food Truck Fridays with live music starting in May.

Whether you’re here for the roar of the engines or just soaking in the small-town charm, Speedway offers a mix of legendary race history, Hoosier hospitality, and local eateries and shops that can’t be beat during race month.
