Indy Maven Receives Martin University’s Inaugural “Ladies First” Award

Martin University Award

In October 2021, Indy Maven was recognized as the first-ever winner of Martin University’s Ladies First Award at the Women’s Empowerment event High Tea and Royal Conversation at Tilly’s Tea Room at Saks Fifth Avenue. The award recognizes leadership in promoting women business owners, specifically women of color, in Indianapolis.

Martin University is Indiana’s only predominantly Black institution (PBI) serving adult learners for nearly half a century. The university was founded in 1977 by Reverend Father Boniface Hardin and Sister Jane Schilling to serve low-income, minority, and adult learners.

The selection committee was impressed with Indy Maven’s consistent commitment to diversity, including representation on the Indy Maven Editorial Board and the directory of Black female owned businesses that was made available in Summer 2020.
