Spring is here, and with a new season comes the opportunity to explore some exciting trends and design ideas in your home. We asked some of Indy’s most respected local design pros—all affiliated with the Indiana Design Center in Carmel—for their thoughts on what to look for when it comes to home design trends this season, as well as for the year ahead.

Whether you opt to reupholster your sofa or ditch the all-gray look and add warmth to your space with earth tones, here are some of the biggest interior design and décor trends to look for in 2022.

2022 HOME DESIGN TREND: LIGHTED SOFFITS

KARA KAVENSKY, MARKETING DIRECTOR FOR ADAM GIBSON DESIGN
ADAMGIBSONDESIGN.COM, @ADAMGIBSONDESIGN

“Utilizing floating, lighted soffits of natural hues beautifully accentuates a space. In this example, the Adam Gibson Design team applied a lighted soffit in a client’s urban kitchen. The natural wood softens and defines the space, and another important element is utilizing a lighting expert (like Adam Gibson) to specify color temperatures to maximize the look and feel. Also note the natural counter as a further defining and warming effect.”

2022 HOME DESIGN TREND: WARM, EARTHY TONES

NATALIE GERTISER, SHOWROOM MANAGER AT FERGUSON BATH, KITCHEN, AND LIGHTING GALLERY
FERGUSON.COM, @FERGUSONSHOWROOMS

“What we are seeing is warm, earthy tones coming back into homes as well as mixing materials and finishes in spaces.”

2022 HOME DESIGN TREND: “GRANDMILLENNIAL” STYLE

CARYN O’SULLIVAN, OWNER OF DRAPERY STREET
DRAPERYSTREET.COM, @DRAPERYSTREET

“Grandmillennial style isn’t just a trend, it’s a design movement. This fun, fresh take on traditional is all about mixing old with new and embracing patterns, textures, and colors.”

2022 HOME DESIGN TREND: REUPHOLSTERING

KATIE KELLY, OWNER OF THE TRADE RESOURCE
THETRADERESOURCE.COM, @THETRADERESOURCE

“One of the biggest trends we are seeing right now is homeowners reusing their current furniture by updating fabrics. Reupholstering is almost a necessity versus buying new, due to supply chain issues and extreme lead times. Homeowners are opting for bold patterns in vibrant colors, which is a nice change from the monochromatic look of the past few years. Adding new window treatments and pillows is a perfect way to enhance that newly reupholstered sofa!”

2022 HOME DESIGN TREND: MIXING METALS

EMILY HASSETT, INTERIOR DESIGNER AT FRANKLIN WINDOW AND DOOR
FRANKLINWINDOWANDDOOR.COM, @FRANKLINwINDOwANDDOOR

“Homeowners are beginning to move away from the short term trends that they may see on social media or TV. Creating a timeless home that features finishes, materials, and pieces that can stand the test of time are becoming more popular than ever. Mixing metals or using patina finishes that will age and wear gracefully over time is a great way to keep your home looking beautiful. Glass House Gallery features a plethora of options from Rocky Mountain Hardware and Emtek that display the beauty of mixed finishes and patinas.”
