JANUARY 2023 OVERVIEW

Happy New Year and congratulations—we made it! It’s the beginning of a new era, Mavens, and although it’s true that an era has ended (even for Spellsisters with Hayley’s departure), you know what they say: diamonds form under pressure and nothing lives forever and ever. I hate endings, but these past few months have been full of them. Even though there’s bound to be more transformation on the horizon, this month is sure to deliver both pressure and relief in equal measure.

Coming out of 2022, a year with the US’s first ever Pluto return, a crazy Scorpio-Taurus eclipse cycle, and ending with Mars retrograding in Gemini, releasing some pressure sounds really good right about now. All of the past year’s disruptions and destruction weren’t for nothing, though, and we’re beginning 2023 on an upswing. It’s the season of refreshing beginnings!

To say that this year will be easy-peasy astrologically speaking is a stretch, but thankfully, the period we’re leaving behind was full of dismantling and destruction. The good news is that now we get to build it back better. On December 21, our planet of expansion and lessons, Jupiter, entered Aries, breaking old ties and giving us all an opportunity to see with fresh eyes again. If you’ve felt like things were heavy, you were stuck, or you had questions about how it would all work out, the weight is being lifted and whenever you’re ready, new beginnings await.

Aquarius is a lot more independent and courageous and sets the tone for rebuilding in an innovative way. Just be sure you’re not putting things back the way they were. There’s no use returning to old systems that weren’t working in the first place. Be ready to put yourself out there and go out on a limb for what you believe in, whether it’s an important cause or a personal creative project that deserves new life. Even if you’re challenged, you’re on the right path if you feel passionate about it.

Right off the bat, what you consider to be safe and cozy could be under the microscope, and by the end of the month, your comfort zone will have surely expanded. As Venus enters Aquarius on the 2nd, we can all expect to feel a little less stress on our relationships (all of them, romantic, platonic, and professional). We come in hot to the new year with Aquarius challenging us all to rethink the structures we play into and put the gatekeepers of power on blast. A more egalitarian perspective is coming into sharper focus.

On the 6th, we have our first Full Moon of the year, and it’s in open-hearted Cancer, so be sure to set aside some time for deep feeling, dreaming, and cathartic cries. Experiencing the full range of feelings is the perfect way to commemorate this moon; a ritual fit for a queen.

Remember back in October when the energy was sucked out of everything and we all felt suddenly dead-tired and low vibe? We hear about Mercury retrograde all the time because it happens at least quarterly and controls communication. The other planets eventually retrograde, too, and that energy-suck was Mars, our planet of action, going retrograde. Now, on the 12th, it blessedly rights itself and resumes its forward momentum, releasing us from the doldrums of inactivity. If you’ve felt lately like you have no idea where anything is going, this should bring some clarity and bring us all back to life. Mercury, which went retrograde on the 28th of December rights itself shortly after, on the 18th, right before the sun moves into Aquarius on the 20th.

BIRTHDAY SPOTLIGHT: CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 19):

Birthday babe, things appear to be more or less smooth sailing for you this month as we kick off the New Year and open up to all the possibilities a fresh start can bring. It’s inspiring to get clear on your goals, write them down in a fresh planner, and create a step-by-step routine to accomplish them. But it’s not always the most effective way to meet a goal. The thing is, when you simply put your head down and get down to work, sure—you’ll likely get there eventually. But are you living in the moment, enjoying the process, and delighting in the little things along the way? If the answer is no, then you’re most likely not going to feel like you’re accomplishing anything, even if you see the fruits of your labor right in front of you. Because the thing is, life is for living, not working. Yeah, yeah, yeah, the Capricorn and hard work thing is a stereotype. But really, you’ve been prone to neglecting your physical and emotional well-being in the past, have you not (don’t say no–we all have!)? All of the structure, routines, and rules you use to define success and measure your day are a distraction. Take a day off, for real. Do something that deeply nourishes you and has no bearing on any of your goals. The point is to enjoy yourself in the process of getting what you want.

Tarotscopes | The Empress

Key Dates: 2, 6, 18, 20

Famous Capricorn: Dolly Parton, January 19

Local Capricorn: Eric Bogan, bartender at Inferno Room (ask him about his favorite rum and you’ve got a friend for life)

NOW FOR THE REST OF YOU...

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 – FEBRUARY 18):

Babe, you have got to prioritize yourself and focus on your wellness, in every way! It’s time to assess the damage and turn over a new leaf. Those late nights out are draining tf out of you and making you feel ten years older than you actually are. Give yourself a break, a night off, some time in. Maybe you’ll be inspired to revive a long-abandoned exercise routine, drink more water, and get more rest. But for real, take your vitamins, stay hydrated, and do some meditation. This month is about staying in your lane and paying attention to what really makes you feel good. When you try to do it all and tame every beast, you are inevitably going to feel drained and that’s not feeling good, bb. You need to have fun, but within reason. You need to focus on your health, but within reason. Don’t go 100% all-in to anything—you’re a prismatic being, not a flat surface.

Tarotscopes | Ace of Cups: Taking care is the best gift you can give yourself.

Key Dates: 2, 12, 20-22

PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 – MARCH 20):

This month, you’re seeking inner peace and you’re most likely going to find it in all the usual ways: meditation, journaling, breathwork, yoga, dreams, etc. You have such an intense innate ability to focus your attention inward and glean insight. Your inner compass does not lie to you and your best ideas come from that place you visit in your dreams. It might feel like lately, you’ve been too busy to tap into that side of yourself, but as we settle into the New Year, things will slow down for you. Take a deep breath and cut yourself some slack because what you’ve been dealing with has been heavy and on top of that, everyone is always looking to you for guidance. Pay special attention to the vibes you’r picking up on the Full Moon in Cancer on the 6th—this could be a special day for creative bursts and intuitive insights. Don’t expect to solve it all in one day.

Tarotscopes | Temperance: Take the good with the bad and find a way to see the upside.

Key Dates: 6, 22, 26

ARIES (MARCH 21 – APRIL 19):

You hate to leave anything unfinished or to turn your back on a job, and maybe it’s not your literal job, but there’s something in your life that you know you need to walk away from. This is the month for you to do it. The problem with sticking it out and trying to see this thing through is that there is no kind of closure that would actually make it feel closed enough. You’re more sensitive than usual this month, and on the brink of a breakthrough if you lean into that softness. You simply can’t plan or schedule change. Know that walking away from situations that no longer feed your soul can be medicinal and no longer contributing to The Thing when your heart’s not in it is going to feel so liberating. You deserve to let yourself be wrapped up in a little cocoon this month so that something new can incubate. You’re going to do something so cool next, but you can’t expect your life to change if you don’t make any changes.

Tarotscopes | Death: Watering a dead plant won’t bring it back to life.

Key Dates: 2, 6, 18, 20

TAURUS (APRIL 20 – MAY 20):

With your ruler, Venus, moving into the part of your chart that houses your career and aspirations, you’re starting the year on a high note. Your inspiration runneth over, leading you deeper into a new paradigm. You’ve changed a lot on the inside and now you’re ready to see that reflected back physically. You’ve got ideas, honey, and you’re on the move. The only issue is that other people might not be expecting your next step. It’s all fun and games until someone reacts and gets hurt, and that someone might be you. You’re ready for a revolution, but you can’t just decide that one day and expect to see results the next. Calculate your decisions and get clear on where you’re trying to go. You can’t always wait for the lagging to catch up with you, but be sure you’re not making rash decisions or being reactionary. Especially in the first few weeks of January, you’re likely to be feeling emotional and extra sensitive—it might hurt when you decide you want something that nobody else wants. Just don’t push if you don’t want to be pushed back.

Tarotscopes | 7 of Wands: You’ve got your back up and expect a confrontation, but it’s probably not for the right reasons.

Key Dates: 2, 6, 12. 20

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 20):

It’s like they always say: when one door closes, another opens, and in order for there to be a new era, an old chapter has to end. You’re facing a loss in some way, and while it may not be on a sharp degree, it feels like it is in the moment. It’s not like you’ve lost it all, though, and this month is for counting your blessings, sweet Gem. All is not lost, and if you look closer, this ending is actually surprisingly refreshing. You’ve been on a track to shake things up for ages, and now that it’s finally happened, you have a new direction. Now that you don’t have to play that tired role,  you can truly consider who you want to be and where you want to go next. You’re on the right path if you feel curious. Focus on what you want to learn about and what’s truly inspiring to this version of you right now, and not what you think you’re supposed to be inspired by. You’re lit up by totally different experiences than you’ve ever been before.

Tarotscopes | The Star: The universe has surprises for you. Follow your heart to discover new dreams.

Key Dates: 12, 18, 20

CANCER (JUNE 21 – JuLY 22):

There’s nothing more refreshing than a change of perspective and since it’s the new year and you’re nothing if not pragmatic, you’re itching for a fresh start. But don’t be hasty, lil crab, your transformation is coming. There’s no reason to make yourself more uncomfy than necessary by pushing too hard against the edge of what’s next. The first Full Moon of the year is in your sign on the 6th, showing you that there’s nothing left to be afraid of. These past few months, you’ve been steeping and stewing, dealing with your problems quietly and keeping them to yourself. The missing link is the other players—in other words, you can’t get there from here on your own, and it’s time to let someone in. Nobody can read your mind, bb, and you’ll have to ask for the help you need. You may hesitate to show your soft underbelly, but don’t worry. The world is a little bit sweeter now and you lead by example. Your softness is a permission slip for others to bare theirs, too.

Tarotscopes | Queen of Cups: Lead with your heart and you can’t go wrong.

Key Dates: 6, 12, 18, 26

LEO (JULY 23 – AUGUST 22):

Your finger’s on the pulse of the next big thing and you don’t even know it yet. You’re different, but it’s brave and when you’re afraid of looking weird you still have the courage to go after what you want wholeheartedly. You’re picking up on a trending evolution before anyone else right now. What makes you feel like a fool now will soon prove to be an advantage. Only this time, it seems like what’s intriguing you doesn’t appeal to everyone, so it doesn’t feel like much of an advantage at first. The past few years have made you feel even more open to doing things differently. This month, you still feel like a seeker. Your bravery ought to pay off, but read the room. Be ready and willing to put your confidence on display and ask for what you want explicitly. Clarity is key, especially at the beginning of the month while Mercury is still retrograde. Don’t be swayed away from what you really want. You can only be talked out of your deepest desires for so long.

Tarotscopes | King of Swords: You can only get what you ask for.

Key Dates: 2, 18, 21

VIRGO (AUGUST 23 – SEPTEMBER 22):

Your resolve has been tested these past few months by a bout of lower energy. Don’t beat yourself up—sometimes rest is the exact cure you need, especially when you’re up against something like burnout. This has made it difficult for you to gauge the level of commitment and concentration needed to get the job done. The lines between work and play have gotten a little muddy lately, and your job this month is to figure out which is which and enjoy both in equal measure. If you’ve felt like you’re at a crossroads when it comes to how you express yourself, especially in your career, you can expect to experience more clarity this month. Rest assured that when Mars goes direct on the 12th, things make more sense and you’ll feel more than ready to recommit to your goals. You are deeply ambitious and you want to make things happen, so it can be hard to resist beating yourself up over needing things to be lighthearted. You’ll see that it was all necessary and worth it, though, as your creativity and inspiration are restored.

Tarotscopes | Page of Pentacles: Approach your work with an air of curiosity and make no assumptions.

Key Dates: 2, 12, 22, 26

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 – OCTOBER 22):

This month, your vision is crystal clear and you’re flexing your creative muscles, both romantically and professionally. Stepping into the new year is making you feel extra motivated to take on some of your bigger goals, and this month you’re especially charmed with the ability to stay on top of things consistently. Keep an eye out for sudden bursts of inspiration and magical ideas because a good idea just might be the ticket to transformation this month. There’s only a teeny tiny sliver of space between you and magic right now, and the only thing that’s stopped you from experiencing miracles in the past was your willingness to believe in them. The fact is that things don’t always go as planned, and maybe you were disappointed by a recent upsetting change, but ultimately, there had to be an ending for you to have a new beginning. Take the endings and changes of your recent past as indicators that you’re headed in the right direction, and be open to the potential you have now, post-evolution.

Tarotscopes | The Fool: A blank page equals endless possibilities.

Key Dates: 2, 6, 20, 26

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 – NOVEMBER 21):

You feel different right now. You’re hermiting, thriving on being a homebody and keeping to yourself. It’s the time of year when going inward and resting is the natural order—we should all be wintering. This is the perfect time to reacquaint yourself with your mindfulness and spiritual practice. Consider rearranging your space to match your internal landscape and make way for newness in your life. The urge to purge is strong and you’re ready to clear the way for what’s next. The only problem is that maybe you’re having a hard time communicating why you want to be alone. All this time spent on your own could be clouding your judgment. Even if you think it should be understood, and while it should be natural to withdraw in the dead of winter, it’s not always so easily understood. When Mercury rights itself and goes direct on the 18th, any misunderstandings should clear themselves up. And thankfully, by the end of the month, you’ll be feeling less inclined to internalize it all.

Tarotscopes | The Queen of Swords: What you think is cut and dry isn’t so black and white. Beware of coming off as cold.

Key Dates: 18, 20-22

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 – DECEMBER 21):

You always said you wanted something different, and you thought you’d feel “something different” as soon as you tied up all the loose ends…but this ending doesn’t feel quite as relieving as you expected it to. Unfortunately shutting a door on your past doesn’t erase it or make it go away. Your job this month is to be transparent and honest with yourself about the role you’ve played in the events leading up to now. The easiest thing to do would be to blame someone else for things being this way, but nobody can take all of the blame. It’s nobody’s fault, not even yours. Okay, now that you’ve confronted yourself and gotten brutally honest, it’s time to be pragmatic and make a plan to fix this thing. Perhaps you racked up a bunch of debt over the holidays and you’re afraid to open the bill. Maybe you made a mistake at work that you were hoping would fly under the radar, but it didn’t. It could even be that you’re simply feeling guilty for falling into a codependent pattern. No matter what it is, face it head-on, and then do something about it.

Tarotscopes | The Sun: Even after the darkest night of the soul, the sun rises. See the situation with fresh eyes

Key Dates: 6, 20, 21
